This stunning solid silver butterfly wing, tear drop pendant is over 100 years old. It was made by Henry W. King and Son of 12 Wilmington Square, Rosebery Avenue, Clerkenwell, London. (Telephone: Clerkenwell 1131) The company was later acquired by Thomas L. Mott in 1925.
This piece was in rather poor condition when we acquired it. The silver was tarnished and the encased butterfly wing had almost completely disintegrated, Unsurprisingly after over a century of ware. The original wing would have certainly had questionable ethics, but its replacement is from a 100% natural death Morpho Peleides butterfly that was sourced by ourselves from a UK butterfly house. Due to the fact that the butterfly used had lived a full life, the wing is not completely perfect. There’s a few scale imperfections but in our opinion this only adds to its charm, knowing that the pendant is now ethically sound.
The pendant measures 5cm x 2.5cm and has a clear HWK stamp to the reverse. It is suspended on a 40cm chain also made from silver stamped 925, but possibly a later replacement of the original. The original glass magnifier dome has no cracks but does have some age related surface pitting that is mainly visible when viewed at close range from the side.
In summary, this elegant piece of antique jewellery is in very good condition and deserves to be worn at glamorous occasions, high days and holidays for another 100 years to come.
